Gather together some artwork to give pizzazz to your site. The number of images you need will depend on the number of pages you plan to have, but you'll want a selection of items that complement each other well. You probably don't need more than a couple of images per page. You might want to use one image as a logo that you can place on each page to help carry a consistent theme throughout your site. Consider using your own photography on your pages. Stick to simple, clear and well-cropped images, with no background clutter. You can have your photos developed onto a disk by the photo developer, or you can have them scanned at someplace like Kinko's. Or, you might want to make your own simple logos. Small, colorful geometric designs can be very effective and easy for anyone to make. Get some tips from the Basic Building Blocks web site and give it a try! If you'd rather not make your own stuff, there are many places to get free artwork. Art Today has a great selection of graphics, photos, logos, buttons, etc., many offered totally free. Or try Designs4Free. Always read the terms of use--many providers will require you to link back to their site. Whatever kind of images you use, be sure to optimize them for use on the web. Optimization will shrink the file size of images so that they load as quickly as possible. Newer versions of many popular software programs like Adobe Photoshop have the capability of optimizing graphics. There are also stand-alone optimizer programs, such as Ignite which is available for a free 30-day trial. Or you can visit the Gif Wizard web site that will optimize your first few images for free. |
