Promote your site on as many search engines, web directories and indexes as possible (don't forget to submit to AOL). There are some good listings available, like the WebStep Top 100 or The 1000.com. Start with the bigger sites first, and then move on to the more minor sites if you have time. Keep a list of when you submit to each site, and resubmit after a month or so if you are still not listed.

If your site is still undergoing improvements, hold off on submitting to some sites like Yahoo! until your site is really ready to be judged.

Visit newsgroups that cover topics directly related to your site and post a message announcing the opening of your web site and encouraging people to check it out. (Be sure you are familiar with the newsgroup and its protocols before posting.)

Send a message to web masters of similar sites, complimenting them on their site and inviting them to visit your site. Hopefully, many of them will add your site as a link on their pages. You should already have them listed as a link, of course, even if it is on a "sub-page" to your main "Links" page.

Look for publications (on-line and off-line) that might be interested in doing a feature on your site. Write them a message summarizing how your site would be of interest to their readers.

Submit your site for awards and "sites-of-the-day" as appropriate.

You can even create your own award to be given to deserving web sites that have a topic related to your own. Create an award logo that will link people back to your pages.
